Star Trek Fleet Command’ has been bought by Scopely!

Studio, Will Expand Characters, and Platforms!!

Game publisher Scopely said it has acquired DIGIT Game Studios, the Irish developer behind the hit multiplayer strategy title Star Trek Fleet Command, which debuted in November and surpassed more than $50 million in revenues within four months. Terms were not announced.

The DIGIT deal brings in-house a major hitmaker for Scopely and also gives it a bigger foothold in Europe. Scopely first took a strategic minority position in DIGIT in 2015, as the companies began developing what became Star Trek Fleet Command. The game is an unusual hybrid for the mobile space, combining strategy and a persistent, massively multiplayer online world.

“By buying the remaining stake, we can build a shared road map for future games,” said Scopely CEO Walter Driver, who outlined several potential areas of expansion for the burgeoning franchise. “We’re excited about the acquisition.”

Fleet Command‘s characters are based on those in the J.J. Abrams-directed era of Star Trek movies, which feature Chris Pine as a young Capt. James T. Kirk. Going forward, Driver said the companies are considering how to incorporate into the game other iterations and casts of the five-decade-old TV and film franchise.

“We try to build an experience that feels welcoming to anyone familiar with that universe,” Driver said. “But there are people who have deeper attachments to other parts of this franchise. We are looking for ways to appeal to different generations of fans.”
